Mary Gabriel. 2011. Love and Capital: Karl and Jenny Marx and the Birth of a Revolution. New York Boston London: Little, Brown and Co. 837pp.

This voluminous work by Mary Gabriel is not just a biography of Karl Marx but also deals with his wife, the aristocratic Jenny von Westphalen and their daughters. The book provides a balanced portrait of Marx and his family, Engels, and their life in exile. It portrays Marx and his family as just as human folk like the rest of us. At the same time, the narrative of their daily lives are fitted well into Marx’s almost super-human effort to continue writing and finish his great work Capital and against the backdrop of historical events of the time. The story is tragic at some parts, funny in other ways, and often delves uncomfortably into the passionate affair and private foibles of Karl and Jenny.
